September 30th is the

National Day For Truth and Reconciliation

A day for all of us to honor the resilience, dignity and strength of survivors of residential schools and remember the children who never came home.

You are invited to mark this day by joining us for a coffee reception in the hall after the 10 am Mass on Sunday Sept. 29th.

We welcome any food or drinks that you are able to donate for the reception.

If you are able to make a donation, please let Jennifer Miles know at

jen.miles.is@rogers.com

Jen is keeping track of who is bringing what for the reception.

Our guest speaker will be Karen Hill.

She is Mohawk from the Six Nations of the Grand River community and is the former (now retired) Director of Community and Social Services for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne.

Ms. Hill has a Master's degree in Social work and worked in senior level child services for much of her career, with extensive experience in policy, legislation and provincial coordination.

Ms. Hill practices traditional culture and enjoys running and practicing yoga.  She has two daughters and one granddaughter.

The Children’s Program will also mark this day with an appropriate lesson on the 29th.

There will be orange Every Child Matters T-shirts available for sale at the entrance to the church again this year.  The t-shirts will be sold after the masses on Sept. 7th/8th and Sept. 14th/15th.  The t-shirts come in various sizes.  The cost is 15-dollars per t-shirt.

All proceeds go to Indspire, a national Indigenous charity that invests in the education of Indigenous peoples.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you on Sept. 29th.

The Truth and Reconciliation Group has put together the following list of books, internet links and other resources as a result of ongoing dialogue within the Parish on how we as parishioners can learn more about Truth and Reconciliation, as part of Action #59 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action, namely: “We call upon church parties to the Settlement Agreement to develop ongoing education strategies to ensure that their respective congregations learn about their church's role in colonization, the history and legacy of residential schools, and why apologies and reparations to former residential school survivors, their families and communities were necessary.”

We invite you to explore these resources and join in on our shared learning journey. Our next meeting will be in January, at which time we have committed to share reflections on what we have read over the holidays.
